Diverse Performance Cruise Case Study
Mirabella V is the largest single masted yacht in the world and was built by Vosper Thornycroft, one of the worlds leading experts in the field of specialised composite construction. At 75m long and with a weight of 750 tonnes it was understood from the start that this groundbreaking yacht would need specialised equipment to deal with the huge loads being put through it.
A custom designed package...
Diverse worked with Harken US and Harken Italy to coordinate hardware design and build with the oversight of the project managers. We had the knowledge and capability to offer solutions to the hardware and load conundrums that faced the management team.
There were three ways in which Diverse helped in the build of this magnificent yacht:
1) Harken Custom Deck Hardware
2) Harken Winches
3) Custom Loadcells
Harken Deck Hardware
It was a taken from the beginning, that the loads and constant work demanded of the hardware was going to be huge and thus Harken were the only sensible choice for certain hardware reliability. Following discussions with managers and designers, Diverse identified the points of concern and worked with Harken engineers and Corrine Rich, the Harken Custom Manager, to design custom deck hardware for Mirabella V. Diverse technicians then installed this specially engineered equipment to the yacht in the VT yard.
Custom Loadcells
Diverse helped identify areas of high load and then designed and built custom sheer pins to suit. There were around 18 loadcells installed in different parts of the yacht to measure the load being put through the infrastructure and electronic boxes fitted that then interfaced into the management monitoring system. Within this there were electronics specially fitted, by Diverse, to control the loads on lines being put through the vital captive winches, this would ensure that no overload would occur and a safety release system would be triggered if needed.
LCM built pins for all the vital reel winches to not only monitor the sheet and runner loads but to provide cut off levels for winch speed changes and overload protection. Pins were also installed in the 3 forestays, the runners and backstays. Each load pin was interfaced to the onboard monitoring system. The system was set up, calibrated and commissioned by Sailforce Systems.

Completing the service...
Diverse then followed the project through into the commissioning and sail trials to ensure the equipment fitted worked properly, and was being utilised correctly.
