PROJECT - case study

40 DEGREES - OPEN 40
Genre: Single/Double Handed

Following great success and overall domination in the 2008 season in the original 40 Degrees, the new 40 Degrees was launched this autumn. 40 Degrees is an Owen Clarke design Open 40 Class, racing yacht optimised for single and double handed racing. She was built by Jazz Marine in Cape Town and is skippered by Miranda Merron.

Already proving the success of the project, she was entered and won the Morbihan Mondial, and is presently racing in the La Solidaire du Chocolat.

The instrument package was supplied, installed and commissioned by Diverse Yacht Services. The influences in the system design were the need for a robust and reliable system with equipment that the crew were familiar with and confident to use. As preparation time was limited having familiar kit onboard made the learning process of getting all systems running at speed much easier.

Brief outline of the system: H3000 with B&G pilot system. Coms package: Fleet 250 backed up with Sat C, mobile Iridium. PC system running on MaxSea.

“As with all previous experiences with these guys, we have really enjoyed working with the 40 Degrees team on this project. Despite a few ‘curve balls’ we were able to keep things on track with commendable effort from our engineer Steve and shear hard work from Alex (boat captain). The results will speak for themselves and we wish 40 Degrees every success over the coming season” Rachel Howe, Project manager.
