PROJECT - case study

Ecover and Aviva, Open 60s (2 boats)
Genre: Single Handed

Mike Golding is arguably the UKs leading singlehanded sailor and Diverse Yachts are proud to have been associated with him for several years, having fitted out and commissioned three generations of his Open 60 yachts which he has sailed under the Ecover banner.

In 2007 he formed a technical alliance with Dee Caffari and Aviva Ocean Racing with a view to collaborating on the building and preparation of two Owen Clarke designed Open 60 class yachts for the 2008/9 Vendee Globe race, the Everest of single-handed ocean racing.

Diverse Yachts were contracted to supply, fit and commission all the electronic and electrical systems on both boats and Alastair worked closely with both teams from the planning stages, construction at Hakes Marine in Wellington, New Zealand, through training and preparation to the start of the race in November 2008.

Starting with two virtually identical hulls, the boats were fitted out with attention to the individual goals and requirements of the two skippers. Mike, with his wealth of experience was looking for a system which would optimise his chances of realising his very real dream of victory in this race, while Dees brief, as a first time entrant in this race, was for a relatively uncomplicated system with the reliability to see her through to completion of this most gruelling of ocean races.
